Profile fundamentals
Aluminium Profile Finishes: Mill Finish, Anodizing and Coating

The finish is part of an aluminium profile's specification. It describes more than colour: the enquiry may also need to establish texture, gloss, visible surfaces, exposure conditions and how appearance will be approved. A photograph of a black window frame does not capture all of those decisions.
Mill finish, anodized aluminium and powder-coated aluminium describe different surface conditions or processes. Understanding the difference helps you discuss architectural aluminium profiles and custom extrusion requirements with Omalco, and compare quotations that cover the same finished component.
At a glance
- Mill finish describes aluminium without an additional applied surface finish.
- Anodizing develops an oxide surface layer; powder coating applies and cures a coating on a prepared surface.
- Approve a physical appearance reference and the required finish specification alongside the profile drawing.
What is a mill-finish aluminium profile?
Mill finish refers to the surface of aluminium as it comes from the mill or extrusion process without additional finishing. Aluminium forms a natural oxide layer on exposure to air. Mill finish is a description of that supplied surface condition; it is not a colour match or a promise of a uniform decorative appearance.
When ordering mill-finish profiles, explain how the surface will be used. A concealed component, material intended for further treatment and a visible decorative part can have different acceptance needs. Identify the important surfaces and ask how they will be inspected and protected for the agreed supply scope.
What does anodizing do to an aluminium profile?
Anodizing is an electrochemical treatment that develops the oxide layer at the aluminium surface. It can provide a metallic appearance with different colour options. The Aluminum Anodizers Council explains that appearance is affected by factors including alloy, temper, surface structure and the colouring process, so a colour name alone is an incomplete specification.
For a visible architectural section, agree the appearance range using the actual material and proposed finishing route. Label the approved reference and identify who accepts it. If profiles from several orders will be installed beside each other, discuss that requirement before treating a previously approved sample as a complete instruction for every batch.
What is a powder-coated aluminium profile?
Powder coating applies dry coating material to a suitably prepared surface and cures it using heat. It offers colour and appearance options that differ from anodizing. The Council for Aluminium in Building describes surface preparation, coating application and curing as parts of the finishing process.
Ask about the finish system appropriate to the specified environment, along with the required colour reference, gloss or texture and acceptance requirements. Two quotations describing a profile as powder coated may still cover different specifications. Confirm the proposed finishing scope and sample route before comparing the finished price.
Mechanical texture and the surfaces people see
Mechanical finishing can change the surface texture through processes such as brushing or polishing. It may be a final surface treatment or preparation for another finish. The selected combination needs to be discussed as a complete route, rather than assuming that a texture word identifies every subsequent treatment.
Mark the visible faces on the profile drawing. A long exterior face and an internal groove have different roles in appearance review. Also identify surfaces that need masking or special treatment where specified, and explain the assembly interfaces so any fit requirements can be considered in the finished condition.
Turn a colour preference into an approval reference
A practical finish enquiry gives the manufacturer something specific to review. Share the profile, its application, visible faces, finish specification and appearance reference. Name the person responsible for approving the sample and record the accepted reference with the drawing revision and purchase order.
For example, a facade order delivered in phases should identify which profiles will be seen together and how the approved appearance reference is retained. At receiving inspection, use that reference and the agreed viewing conditions. A phone photograph taken in different light can help record a concern, but it does not replace the agreed acceptance method.
- Profile drawing and the surfaces visible after installation.
- Required finish system, appearance reference and specified performance requirements.
- Sample approval owner, accepted appearance range and inspection method.
- Packing, surface protection, storage and handling instructions.
Discuss finished aluminium profiles with Omalco
Omalco's architectural and custom aluminium profile enquiries can include finish requirements alongside the section drawing. Tell the team whether the material is intended for windows, doors, facade components or another application, and ask for the proposed extrusion and finishing scope to be stated in the offer.
Keep the delivery requirement in that discussion. Finished profiles need an agreed packing and identification plan so receiving teams can handle and check them correctly. For buyers selecting an aluminium profile manufacturer in India, a clear finish approval and supply agreement is more useful than a colour description without supporting details.
Frequently asked questions
Is anodizing the same as powder coating?
No. Anodizing develops the aluminium's oxide surface layer through an electrochemical process. Powder coating applies a coating material to the prepared surface and cures it. Compare the appearance and performance requirements for the application when selecting a finish.
Does a colour code completely specify a finished aluminium profile?
A colour reference is useful, but the enquiry may also need the finish system, gloss or texture, visible faces, exposure conditions, appearance range and acceptance method. Confirm a physical sample where appearance is important.
Should I approve the finish before ordering the profiles?
Agree the finish specification and sample approval route before production release. Coordinate it with the profile drawing and assembly requirements, especially when material will be delivered in phases or installed beside previously supplied sections.
